In 2018, the Republic of Mozambique set forth plans to equip all borders and airports in the country with state-of-the-art border control technology. Not only would the project mean replacing hardware and software at the country’s 13 airports, 24 land borders and seven sea borders, but also ensuring that all Mozambican residents are provided access to high-tech travel documents such as electronic IDs and eVisas. Germany-based security specialist Mühlbauer took on this far-reaching assignment. The project’s scope was to install and ramp up a cutting-edge solution for the issue and verification of multiple types of identification documents. At the same time, it was necessary to implement a comprehensive border control system, to identify and verify documents as well as the document holder. Such a system needed to reliably register and manage all entry and exit data, while interfacing with third parties on a local and international level to exchange information.
